This week, the nation is celebrating National Nurses Week, paying tribute to the 4.2 million nurses throughout the U.S. who help keep our citizens healthy, both mentally and physically, provide essential care to the wounded, ill and injured, conduct research, educate the next generation, and serve as mentors to others and leaders throughout the profession.

According to the 2023 Gallup survey, nurses have ranked as the most trusted profession in the country – a distinction they have held for more than 20 years. Here at USU, we are truly fortunate to have the Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing, led by Dr. Carol Romano and her outstanding faculty, who are leaders in the field of nursing – in clinical care, in education, and in research. The GSN is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and I am very pleased to pay tribute to the students, faculty and graduates of the GSN who are known for their selfless contributions, leadership, expertise and commitment to service and are widely recognized throughout the Military Health System and the U.S. Public Health Service.

2023 also marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the GSN’s PhD in Nursing Science program, which for two decades has helped develop military nurse scientists who continue to conduct research that supports the warfighter and DoD operational missions. Congratulations on your outstanding accomplishments.

We are also very proud of the many nurse leaders who work throughout our USU community -- in our schools, colleges, centers, institutes and Office of the President -- who contribute most notably to our complex missions each and every day.  Thank you!

Please join me in thanking all of our nursing students, staff, faculty and alumni for their extraordinary talent and dedication to the nursing profession and to the University. Though we may not say it enough, your contributions and skills are appreciated this week and throughout the year.  Thank you!

Happy National Nurses Week and thanks again for all you do!

Jonathan Woodson, MD, MSS, FACS
