“Memorial Day is one of America's most valued patriotic observances; a day to honor those who died defending our freedom and democracy. Today's event allows all of us to take a moment in our busy lives to reflect, remember and to honor all those who have fought and died in defense of our nation, as well as those uniformed men and women who continue to serve our nation today and their families. I am honored to have been asked to participate in today's Memorial Day observance in Gaithersburg, Thomas said.

U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen were also represented at the ceremony held in the City's Christman Park, named for a heroic Gaithersburg resident killed during the Vietnam War.

“This event pays tribute to our fallen service members and their willingness to put service before self as well as acknowledging the important sacrifices their families have made,” said Thomas. “We owe a great debt to them for their ultimate sacrifice in service to our Nation. These men and women are our greatest heroes.”
